NEUE WELTEN

PICK OF THE DAY Exhibition
In the organizer's words:

Discovering the collection

Since summer 2019, the Museum Folkwang has been presenting its collection in completely redesigned rooms. Under the guiding theme of New Worlds, visitors can experience and discover the traditional collection in a new form and often from a surprising perspective. Painting meets photography, sculpture or graphic art and enters into previously unseen and inspiring constellations with world art and posters.

Each room in the collection is arranged across different media and epochs. In the spirit of the Folkwang idea of museum founder Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874-1921), the genres and different areas of the collection enter into a dialog with each other. The new presentation covers the entire collection area in the old and new museum buildings and invites visitors to rediscover the collection.

Each of the 24 rooms is grouped around a so-called anchor work, which provides a thematic impulse. All rooms deal with new beginnings, new departures and new times. The title of the presentation New Worlds thus also addresses current socio-political issues such as migration, the flood of images and fake news in social media - a contemporary look at a collection that has grown over time.

The Prometheus Bound room opens the New Worlds tour. It is dedicated to the artistic exploration of creation myths from different cultural contexts. Alongside Barnett Newman's paintings, mythological references such as Max Beckmann's Perseus (1941) and Albert Renger-Patzsch's photograph Natterkopf (1925) can be seen. From there, Neue Welten opens up a tour that presents the diversity and richness of a collection that spans epochs and media, formats and themes in its uniqueness.
