Bertil is home alone again because his parents both had to go to work. Suddenly the boy hears small, tripping footsteps. It's Nils Karlsson, the thumbelina, who actually wants to be called Nisse. He has just moved into a mouse hole in the wall of Bertil's room. Nisse tells Bertil a trick that will make him just as small as he is. Once the size difference has been overcome and Bertil himself has shrunk to the size of a thumb, they spend the whole day together.
Astrid Lindgren's story about the little boy from the city who finds a new friend in his loneliness was developed as part of the Young Opera Rhine-Ruhr cooperation and imaginatively told and performed through the interplay of a voice and a violin.
After the performance, there will be an opportunity for a discussion with those involved in the production.
