With the new "Open Pages" reading series, the former colliery's reading hall is being transformed into a place for contemporary literature - for texts that make diversity audible, bring together different voices and pose questions about our times. Writer Saša Stanišić is the first author to visit Zollverein with his speeches against doing nothing, published in 2025.
Where coal was once sorted and "selected", words are now turned, voices are heard and attitudes are examined. The new literature format "Open Pages" opens up perspectives, promotes discourse and celebrates the diversity of literary forms of expression: from novels and spoken word to essayistic and hybrid formats. Between poetry and politics, memory and renewal, belonging and doubt, the invited authors and the audience meet at eye level - in a joint reflection on identity, responsibility and what unites or divides us.
Saša Stanišić kicks things off with his encouragement "My misfortune begins with the circuit being depicted as a rectangle" - a passionate book about responsibility, self-efficacy and the courage to get involved.
