It’s hard to imagine today, but in Hamburg, Mahler was celebrated primarily as a conductor and opera director, and hardly at all as a composer. Nevertheless, Mahler also composed significant works during his time in Hamburg, laying the foundation for his extensive orchestral works and symphonies. Albrecht Schultze sheds light on these aspects and provides context for key works.

The exhibitions at the KomponistenQuartier were curated by the respective composers’ societies, each of which presents “its” composer’s life and work. During the public guided tours, members of the composers’ societies present additional aspects and in-depth topics—with very different, individual focuses that never fail to surprise.
