Gabey, Chip, and Ozzie—three young sailors—are on shore leave in New York and have exactly 24 hours to explore the city. On their very first subway ride, Gabey falls in love with the poster image of Ivy Smith, who has been voted “Miss Subway of the Month.” He has to find her, so the three friends decide to split up and search for her in the vast city. Full of anticipation, they plunge into the urban jungle: New York, New Me!

*On the Town* (1944) is Leonard Bernstein’s declaration of love for “his” city, as he liked to call New York. The rousing music by the composer and conductor—who was just 26 at the time—marked Bernstein’s big breakthrough. Eleven years later, *West Side Story* made him immortal.
