Seymour Parish (Robin Williams) is the friendly, hard-working boss of a photo lab in a huge American supermarket. Without having a private life of his own, he takes a special interest in that of his customers. He develops the photos of their children's birthdays, vacations, weddings and dreams his way further and further into their lives.

Nina and Will Yorkin's family in particular arouses his curiosity. When Seymour discovers that Will is cheating on his wife, the introverted man slowly begins to interfere in the family's life. He dreams of exposing the affair and getting together with Nina. Is he even prepared to commit a crime?
