Have you always wanted to cross the Alps? Then get your ÖSTER REICHT Alpine Pass at the Schaubühne! On three evenings in February, you will see the abysses, ravines and peaks of the Austrian soul, hang on the lips of Thomas Bernhard, stumble into Viennese coffee, fall for Viennese wit and attend a cinematic gem with a band from Vienna that has traveled here especially for the occasion.
Austria reaches far. Reaches far. And then it's enough.
THE UNDERTAKER
Theater | Friday, 07 February - 8 pm
Two days before Thomas Bernhard's 95th birthday, the ÖSTER REICHT festival begins with Bernhard's text DER UNTERGEHER as a magnificent monologue by actor, director and pianist Christian Fries. He has developed a theatrical version of the novel that focuses on the text. He wants the audience to think about Thomas Bernhard and become entangled in these thoughts. What makes an existence succeed or fail? Why do people become lonely, why do they "perish"? An evening about competition, family entanglements, exaggerated ideals of life. An evening that brings Bernhard's rhythmic-musical language and his typical abysmally evil comedy to full fruition.
(Duration approx. two hours without intermission)
Acting: Christian Fries
RED - WHITE NOT - RED
Literature / Music | Saturday, February 08 - 6 pm
With ROT - WEISS NICHT - ROT. MEIN ÖSTERREICH - EIN BLINDER FLECK, the Viennese Verena Noll, who lives in Leipzig, and the Austrian musician Mary Broadcast, who lives in Vienna, shed light on those corners of Austrian literature and music that are not already well known and search for the "blind spots" of the Austrian soul. The program spans an arc from the coffee house to the Alps, from the not always so "good old days" to the present. (Duration: approx. two hours with interval).
Acting, organization: Verena Noll
Vocals, guitar: Mary Broadcast
THE GREEN COCKATOO
Silent film / live music | Friday, February 13 - 8 pm
We are looking forward with great anticipation to the German premiere of DER GRÜNE KAKADU: As the only surviving feature-length amateur silent film from this period, THE GREEN KAKADU is a true rarity, full of story(s) - and exciting views of old Vienna. The live musical accompaniment by the Viennese band WIENER BRUT, whose singer Katharina Hohenberger is the granddaughter of the film's director, is particularly appealing and charming. Pianist and composer Sascha Peres composed the music especially for the film and will also be performing live in Leipzig. Before the screening, there will be a discussion with Katharina Hohenberger, who will be able to talk "first-hand" about the reception of the film in her family. The film was taken under the wing of the Austrian Film Museum and shown for the first time in Vienna in January 2024. Since then, there have been several very successful screenings in Austria.
Vocals, violin: Katharina Hohenberger

Accordion: Johannes Münzner
