A dance piece for everyone aged 14 and over.
In a society that is predominantly shaped by older people, young people rarely have a say. But they have questions, demands and visions. Who takes responsibility for the future? Who decides and who bears the consequences?
Based on a joint research process with young people, the new trouble team addresses these questions about responsibility and scope for action: what does it take to raise your voice despite unfair starting conditions and the power gap between generations?
In OUR FUTURE, dancer Laura Schönlau invites the audience into a speculative training space. In the midst of a fragile construction, she practices attack and defense, testing what it means to stand up for something. Accompanied by the voices and perspectives of the young people, a polyphonic solo unfolds - between movement and sound, speculation and hope, outlook and foresight.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
OUR FUTURE is dedicated to the question of what we need to practise together in order to prepare for the future in the face of multiple crises. How can we encourage each other when we feel powerless?
Based on a joint research process with young people, the artistic team of new trouble asks: "What does it take to raise our voices despite unfair starting conditions and the power gap between generations in our society?"
OUR FUTURE is the third part of the interdisciplinary choreographic long-term project FUTURE RELATIONS (2023 - 2025), which sets out in search of sustainable relationships in times of escalating climate catastrophe. Scientific solutions are available, decisions and transformations are necessary, but still too little is happening.
In the years 2023 - 2025, Antje Velsinger & team will therefore use artistic means to investigate various alternative relationships both to ecological resources and between generations. The aim is to create a transformation process together with young people and adults that looks for ways of dealing with and emerging from the crisis. The entire concept for FUTURE RELATIONS is based on the following thesis: In order to find ways out of the ecological crisis, to enable a future worth living for the generations to come, we must stop focusing primarily on ourselves here and now. We must seek and develop practices and strategies here and now with which we can enter into FUTURE-FRIENDLY RELATIONSHIPS.
In the 2022/23 season, Antje Velsinger / new trouble in THEIR FUTURE dealt with the relationship to the future from the perspective of parents. In the format of a stage play, they staged the conflict between the parental need to protect and care for their own children and the knowledge that the world into which we release our children is not sufficiently protected by us adults and is increasingly being destroyed. Premiere was on September 22 & 23, 2023 at Tanzhaus NRW, Düsseldorf.
The performance GOODBYE/FAREWELL, premiering on October 18, 2024 at Tanzfaktur Köln, is dedicated to the question of what we have to say goodbye to in the face of the climate crisis. How do we learn to let go of old habits and illusions and say goodbye? Choreographic strategies for saying goodbye are interwoven with stories of loss and rituals that question our place in the world. Three dancers repeatedly open up spaces in which grief can be admitted and shared. The audience is invited to enter these spaces together with the performers and to look out for moments in which change begins.
