It is a polyphonic panorama of life in the GDR and the newly reunified Germany: at the center are Georg, who initially still hopes to move the state forward with the help of the first computers and cybernetics, and the artist Mona. A rich ensemble of characters develops around them, such as Georg's friend Roland, who flees to the West, and the economist Marlies, who tries to reform the system from within. They all meet in a village near Berlin, where strange secret building activities soon begin. "Self-Regulation of the Heart" tells of closeness and alienation, love and friendship, adaptation and resilience in complex systems.
