Studio spaces are empty: many artists have to earn their living elsewhere, more intensively than ever. But what happens when funding is also lost in the jobs in which artists have often worked in the past: cultural education, social work, implementing inclusion, diversity or equality projects with marginalized young people, etc.? The cycle comes to a standstill and it is not only art and culture that fall by the wayside in the maelstrom of cuts.

Municipal Capitals: The significance of municipal galleries in the context of the visual arts in Berlin
To kick off Kommunale Kapitale, the panel discussion will focus on the role of municipal galleries in mapping the visual arts in Berlin in times of increasing challenges.
The panel discussion is intended - in these nervous times - to help reflect on how the fabric and structures of the visual arts in Berlin are intertwined and mutually dependent.
The questions that will guide us are: What function does the visual arts have for the city? What role do the different locations play in the functioning of the "art operating system"? And what role do the municipal galleries play in particular?
A panel discussion with:
This will be followed by Sounds - The Night of the Artist:inside Bands.
Free admission.
The performance, panel discussion and sounds will take place as part of the Kommunale Kapitale - Action Days of the Kommunale Galerien Berlin (16.-19.10.2025).

The studio spaces are empty. Many artists are being forced to earn a living elsewhere, working harder than ever. But what happens when funding disappears from jobs where artists have long found employment: cultural education, community social work, inclusion, diversity and equality initiatives? The cycle grinds to a halt, and art and culture are not the only victims in the wake of widespread cuts.
