In this lecture performance, director Maria Isabel Hagen presents her long-term artistic project PERFORMING DENKMAL, which deals with Hamburg's colonial heritage and develops new forms of commemoration.
Together with an interdisciplinary team, she asks: What can remembrance of colonial violence look like today - beyond bronze, stone and pathos? What perspectives do artists with colonial roots living in Hamburg today contribute? And what can the memorial of the future look like?
The project focuses on the development of ten performative monuments that will be created in Hamburg's urban space in 2025 and 2026 - temporary, physical, speaking, questioning. They will be complemented by a final performance in the Lichthof Theater, which will take place live as the "11th monument" on several evenings in February 2026.
In her lecture performance, Maria Isabel Hagen will present her artistic research process, provide insight into the artistic concept, the research processes, challenges and questions to date - and invite the audience to think together about new forms of remembrance.
Premiere of the performance: February 26, 2026
Location: Lichthof Theater Hamburg
The event is part of the W3_Project Colonial Traces - Decolonial Practices.
