Franconian summer 2025
Persian Night
Sounds like stories from the Arabian Nights
In this "Persian Night", the artists take their audience on a fascinating journey to their homeland. Austrian-born cellist Kian Soltani is not only Artist in Residence at this year's Franconian Summer, but also part of the Ensemble Shiraz, founded by his father Khosro. It plays on traditional instruments, with Soltani also swapping his cello for a kamanche, a "spiked violin" with a round resonating body. It is part of the orchestra in Iranian music. The ney, an end-edged flute without a mouthpiece, and the duduk, a woodwind instrument with an extremely large double reed, are also part of the orchestra. You can also hear singing and the long-necked lute setar as well as its counterpart the oud, a stringed instrument with a short neck. Tombak and daf provide the rhythm. The Ensemble Shiraz plays traditional Persian music, its own arrangements and compositions by Khosro and Kian Soltani as well as works by Hossein Behroozinia: sounds like the stories from the Arabian Nights, which transcend political and religious boundaries with ease.
