Persönliche Führung durch Ausstellung 'An der Grenze' - European Borderlines von Peter Ortner

Boundaries separate and regulate the structure of space!
It is usually man-made barriers that sort the landscape and the mind. They close off, deter or lock in. They decide whether you belong or not. Only at first glance do they provide an overview, yet they are often touted as simple solutions to complex problems.
Yet they are surprisingly permeable and porous. Every new border creates new ways of circumventing the temporary fortifications. Barriers are always temporary and inconsistent, they remain an illusion. Retrospectively, they are erased and lose themselves in almost non-existent lines on the surface.
Photographer Peter Ortner has searched for and photographed borders. In this serial work, he documents some of the scars of European history. Visible and invisible dividing lines are exhibited, from the borders of the ancient world to the enormous new Frontex barriers. The result is an encyclopaedia of the division of space, which also makes visible its own aesthetics of spatial experience!
