Antonín Dvořák's "Stabat Mater" during Passiontide!
Composed after the death of three of his children in 1877, it is a biographically influenced song of mourning that addresses pain, grief and hope with great inwardness. Rich in melody and poignant, Dvořák seeks to capture the suffering of the Mother of God under the cross in music and created a late Romantic work whose special demands on a flexible, transparent, multi-faceted sound seem to have been made for the Berlin Philharmonic Choir.
