This mushroom course is designed as a compact, multi-day course and is aimed at people who want to learn about mushrooms in a well-founded and systematic way. It is particularly suitable for beginners who feel unsure and want to gain more orientation and identification confidence when picking mushrooms. The aim of the course is to teach the basics of mycology in such a way that participants not only recognize mushrooms, but also learn to identify them independently and comprehensibly.
The course lasts three training days and combines a preparatory online module with two full-day practical days in the field. This structure allows the theoretical basics to be taught in advance, leaving sufficient time for intensive identification work during the attendance phase. The venue is a seminar house in the north of Potsdam, right on the border with Berlin, which offers ideal conditions for mycological excursions due to its surroundings.
Target group and prerequisites
The course is aimed at people with little or no previous knowledge who:
would like to gain more confidence in collecting mushrooms
want to learn how to systematically identify individual species
want to create a solid foundation for further mushroom courses
An introductory seminar is recommended for participants without any previous experience. Alternatively, the theoretical preparation level can be caught up on independently using the digital learning materials provided.
Didactic approach
The mushroom course follows a clear methodical structure: short theoretical blocks alternate with extensive practice in the forest. The focus is on the active identification of real finds, not just on species lists. Participants learn to classify relevant characteristics, use identification literature correctly and realistically assess uncertainties.
The course is led by experienced mushroom expert Victor Grönke. In addition, a free online revision session is offered to consolidate the content in the long term.
Contents of the mushroom course
Theoretical basics (online):
Structure and morphology of mushrooms
Key identification features (lamellae, tubes, stem, cap, spores)
Overview of important systematic groups of fungi
Health and safety aspects (e.g. radioactivity, fox tapeworm)
Causes of mushroom poisoning beyond classic poisonous mushrooms
How to use identification literature, magnifying glasses and other aids
Practice in the field:
Daily excursions with intensive identification work
Application of identification keys based on current finds
Assessing the usability and freshness of mushrooms
Basics of preservation (e.g. drying, pickling)
Introduction to simple microscopic methods (e.g. spore prints)
Organization and services
The course includes
a detailed script
Access to the digital learning platform
a printed certificate of completion
free annual online review dates
Meals and accommodation are not included, a seminar kitchen is available.
After completing the course, participants will have a solid foundation in mushroom science and will be able to classify mushroom finds systematically, critically and confidently. Registration at: https://waldsamkeit.de/pilzkurs-wochenende/
