This advanced mushroom course is aimed at all participants who already have a solid basic knowledge of fungi - whether through our beginner's course "Mushrooms for beginners" or through independent study. The aim is to deepen the ability to safely identify mushrooms, to use identification keys safely and to expand knowledge of more complex mushroom groups such as lamellar mushrooms, boletes and tree fungi.

The course lasts six days, starting with a preparatory online theory unit, followed by four practical days in the seminar house and in the surrounding nature as well as a concluding excursion to woody plants in order to specifically recognize fungi in their ecosystems. The course takes place in the north of Potsdam, on the border with Berlin, and is led by experienced mycologists with a scientific background.

Target group and prerequisites

Participants should already:

know the basics of fungal systematics and the most important genera

be able to confidently identify at least 30 species of fungi

be interested in the independent use of identification keys

If you do not yet have sufficient prior knowledge, you should attend the beginners' course or access the online learning materials of the basic course for a fee to bring yourself up to the same level of knowledge. For prospective course leaders or participants with a comprehensive interest in nature, we recommend the nature guide training course. Parts of the seminar are recognized as educational leave in some federal states.

Methodology and structure

The training combines in-depth theory with intensive practice:

Theory: introduction to complex fungal systematics, advanced identification features, ecology, mycorrhizal partners and the use of dichotomous identification keys

Practice: multi-day excursions to identify fungi in different habitats

Wood science: knowledge of trees and shrubs as partners of fungi

Repetition: Free online repetition dates in the fall and the following year ensure lasting learning success
