Introduction to the diversity, use and ecology of mushrooms

Fungi are increasingly becoming the focus of people interested in nature. For a long time, they were regarded rather casually, although they represent an independent group of organisms with central importance for ecosystems. In addition to their culinary value, mushrooms arouse a lasting interest in many participants due to their diversity of forms, lifestyles and ecological functions, which goes beyond mere collecting.

However, beginners in particular are often confused. This is due to numerous poisonous or harmful species, questions about the environmental impact of soils and uncertainties when assessing freshness and degree of decomposition. The Hamburg mushroom tours specifically address these issues and provide well-founded information.

The tours are accompanied by artist and field mycologist Ben Nurgenç, who combines knowledge of fungi with a broad natural history perspective. During the excursions, the species found are presented and classified. These include edible mushrooms as well as non-edible species and potentially dangerous doppelgangers. One focus is on basic rules that minimize the risk of mushroom poisoning.

The ecological role of fungi is also explained. As decomposers, symbiotic partners and nutrient mediators, they are indispensable for functioning biocoenoses. Aspects of responsible and sustainable use of fungi are also discussed.

The approximately three-hour mushroom tours take place on varying dates and locations in the Hamburg area. The group size is limited to a maximum of 14 participants. The specific content depends on the current mushroom population. In the event of unfavorable weather conditions, such as prolonged drought, the tour may be canceled at short notice; in this case, a voucher will be issued or the participation fee refunded.

After completing the tour, participants will receive supplementary materials by email with selected species portraits and recommended reading.
