Staging:

Get behind the secret, crack the code, possess the key: What drives us to fall for the pull of the unknown, to forget what we originally felt and who we are? In 1834, Alexander Pushkin presented a Russian version of the horror novel with The Queen of Spades. In it, his protagonist Hermann stares fixedly at the window behind which Lisa is sitting. While he tries to elicit the secret of the three cards from the countess, whose companion she is, Lisa mistakes his obsession for love. Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky makes the couple's downfall in his opera all the more drastic by allowing the possibility of a happy life to appear at the beginning of the plot and both of them to choose the path of alienation and self-destruction to madness and death. As in a film noir, the characters in Benedict Andrews' production are drawn into their own abysses.
