Podiumsgespräch: Fußballer*innen auf der Flucht

In the organizer's words:

Soccer has always brought people from different backgrounds and cultures together. In times of migration and flight, however, sport takes on even greater significance. It not only offers the opportunity for integration, but also a platform to draw attention to social challenges and global connections.

The panel discussion will focus on the potential of soccer to give refugees a voice, shed light on their international player biographies and integrate them into society. We will bring together various experts from the fields of sociology, professional soccer and club sport to discuss their experiences, projects, research and perspectives. Together we want to find out how soccer can be used as a tool for social integration.

Dr. Nina Clara Tiesler from the Institute of Sociology at Leibniz Universität Hannover will give a lecture on global athlete biographies on the run and provide basic information on flight and migration. In the subsequent discussion, Mr. Alessandro Orto from the Coordination Office Sport & Refugees in Hanover will report on his work and the Ukrainian professional footballer Mr. Illia Povalii will talk about his escape from the war and his arrival in the national league at 1. FC Wunstorf. The talk will be moderated by Meggy Jackstadt.

The exhibition, the supporting programme and the guided tours are organized in cooperation with Engagement Global as part of the "Development-Related Education in Germany" (EBD) programme. With these free events, Engagement Global aims to motivate people to take a critical look at global developments and encourage them to get involved in sustainable development.
