Normally, paintings hang on the walls—but not this time. “Portals,” the exhibition by students in Prof. Alisa Margolis’s class, directs the viewer’s gaze upward.
The Painting and Figure Drawing class is transforming the ceiling of the ABK Stuttgart library, thereby drawing on a historical tradition of ceiling painting: the ceiling as a portal, as an opening to diverse visual worlds and narratives. In dialogue with the library, this familiar gesture is reinterpreted in a contemporary way.
While reading naturally draws the eye to the page, these works lift it up into the space. Above visitors’ heads, a polyphonic narrative emerges from individual artistic perspectives, standing alongside the stories told by the books.
