The death of a person always means a silence, where before there was life, breathing, a voice.
The death of a person means abandoned spaces, which before that were personal resonant spaces, often shaped for decades and filled with memories. When a person dies, it usually doesn't take long for these spaces to be dissolved, sorted out, rearranged. Like the body of the deceased itself, their closest living environment also disappears - often without a sound for pragmatic reasons.
This is where Post Echoes comes in. In cooperation with the Berliner Stadtmission, the artists explore the personal sound spaces of the deceased and, in consultation with their relatives, develop attentive acoustic obituaries that are intended to set a small musical monument to the deceased.
On the one hand, the exhibition features instruments and sound installations built and played with objects and furniture from the homes: Tinkling glasses, clacking locks, whirring wardrobes - personal favorite pieces tell stories of the lives of their deceased owner:s and invite the audience to listen into the absence of the respective person. On the other hand, videos and sound recordings give an impression of how the apartment as an overall sound space was played with shortly before its dissolution through self-made music. Photographs from the apartments and short portraits of the deceased support the tracing of the sonic references to the lives of the people.
