After the death of his father-in-law, Hauke Haien takes over the office of dyke count and director of coastal protection in a small coastal community in northern Germany. As a nature-loving maverick, he fights with passion against the resistance of the population and the ignorance of the changing climatic conditions. He finds support from his wife Elke, who firmly adheres to his ideas. Despite initial successes, Hauke's radical plans are increasingly met with incomprehension and rejection - disaster is on the horizon, while the pressure on the dyke count continues to grow.
