radioPHØNIX

A cradle of technical development and communicative progress, a medium of real-time information but also of propaganda: radio. The mass medium of the 20th century paved the way for pop, techno and noise and could still hold its own against television for a long time.

"radioPHØNIX" is a series of events by Timo Kreuser & PHØNIX16 in collaboration with 24 radio stations worldwide. In eight installations they address phenomena of radiophonic practice and shed light on the social, political and cultural impact of radio. Each issue is dedicated to artists who have experimented with radio's modes of operation and thus contributed decisively to its further development, both then and now. The two performances at Radialsystem on December 2 and 3 will focus on the experimental approaches of BEATRÍZ Ferreira and KARLHEINZ Stockhausen.

As a socio-technical term, the word radio simultaneously describes organizations (public or private broadcasters) and techniques (recording, production, transmission and reception techniques). Its functioning consists of sound, microphone, signal, transmitter, waves, receiver, tuning and loudspeaker. The eight issues of the series "radioPHØNIX" are each dedicated to one of these modes of operation, based on the work of important radio artists: Ivo Malec invented expressive SOUND on the radio, Daphne Oram SIGNALS, Katalin Ladik SENDED her loud poetry as an acoustic performance. Peter Eötvös dedicated an electronic chronicle to his experiments with WAVES, Pauline Oliveros devoted herself to the radio disturbance of the RECEIVER, Karlheinz Stockhausen found electronic sounds in the TUNING of vocal overtones. Beatríz Ferreyra creates expressive sound sculptures from the MICROPHONING of simple noises such as chattering teeth or birds, and Marisol Jiménez fuses human and technical membranes to create a humanoid LOUDSPEAKER.

The eight editions of "radioPHØNIX" will be presented as 'Public Listenings' at various venues in Berlin and broadcast in parallel on 24 radio stations worldwide. From the stereo signals of the radio stations, multichannel sound sculpture is created only through live mixing at the venues.
