In 2017,Rauchensuddenlyappearedout of nowhere and released their first self-published EP, “Tabakbörse.” The EP featured nothing but wonderfully furious scream-core and noise-core, which immediately caused a stir in relevant scenes and zines, from “Bierschinken” to “Krachfink.” It was only logical that the label Zeitstrafe quickly took notice and, less than two years later, released their no less energetic debut album, “Gartenzwerge unter der Erde.” It took a bit longer for their second album—which they’re now gracing us with this year—to be released. On “Fallen und Schweben,” the Hamburg-based band remains true to its snarling core, yet they noticeably open up toward emo-core, noise rock, post-hardcore, and a melancholy that exudes ’90s vibes—at times almost tender—without ever coming across as nostalgic. Top-notch material that masterfully spans the spectrum between new beginnings and collapse, intensity and devotion. Or, to quote Flight 13:“An album for everyone who seeks comfort in noise and the echo of their anger in silence.”We’re totally on board!
