Rechte Gewalt und staatliches Gewaltmonopol
In the organizer's words:
Lecture and Discussion with Pablo Schmelzer and Prof. Dr. Léonie de Jonge
The years following German reunification oscillated between national euphoria and disillusionment. But they were also years of unchecked violence, for which city names such as Mölln, Solingen, Hoyerswerda, and Rostock-Lichtenhagen have become symbols.
In his lecture, historian Pablo Schmelzer (Hamburg Institute for Social Research) traces the social debate surrounding the erosion of the state’s monopoly on the use of force—a debate that unfolded against the backdrop of the ubiquity of burning asylum shelters, patrolling vigilante groups, and the formation of self-defense groups within migrant communities.
In a subsequent presentation from an international perspective, political scientist Prof. Dr. Léonie de Jonge (Institute for Research on Right-Wing Extremism, Tübingen) will focus on current developments of the far right in Europe and their influence on politics, society, and public debates.
Free admission.
