25 Years of Virus: Future Funk Drum'n'Bass
Virus, founded in 1998 by Ed Rush & Optical, is undoubtedly a central institution of the drum'n'bass scene. The label founded neurofunk and released numerous classics of the genre. Among them, Ed Rush & Optical's legendary Wormhole album, which is considered one of the most important catalysts for the neuro and techstep sound and paved the way for greats like Noisia, Bad Company and many others. That was 25 years ago now, and the anniversary tour will of course make a stop at Gretchen.
Ed Rush is something of a synonym for drum'n'bass and innovative, avant-garde beats. Musically socialized by hip-hop and electro, he quickly found his way into the London jungle scene. One of his first productions was "Bludclot Artattack," made alongside "No U Turn" founder Nico, a darkside jungle classic that ushered in a new era and pushed the music into the realm of drum'n'bass. This was followed by style-defining and genre-bending productions such as "The Mutant" and "Guncheck" in collaboration with DJ Trace, as well as releases on Prototype and Metalheadz.
The collaboration with Optical brought the final breakthrough. They formed Virus and released their first single together there, "Medicine/Punchbag", two tracks with technically precise drum programming and a distorted, deep and crisp bassline. Still sounds like freshly produced today. Optical is not only one of the pioneers of the techstep and neurofunk sound alongside Ed Rush, but also influenced D-Bridge, Instra:mental and the rest of the minimalist dark revival heads. Optical combines jazz, funk and futuristic soundscapes to create entities all his own, proving time and time again that jazz can be an important source of inspiration for drum'n'bass.
Kyrist, DJ and producer from Bristol, is known for her dark, bass-driven vibes with soul. She releases on labels such as Dispatch, Critical and Hospital. She considers herself a DJ first and a producer second. Which says nothing about her output, because it's massive, but inspired by the dancefloor. Kyrist knows what matters.
Aynaet, Survey and MC Jamie White, will add additional atmospheric charge to the whole affair. As always, there are more bass tidbits in Box 2, this time put together by Impulse Basskultur.
