Restaurierung im Dialog
In the organizer's words:
Conservation is a fascinating yet often overlooked field of work in museums. What is preserved, how is it done, and who makes those decisions? This exhibition sheds light on the various aspects of this important work.
Before the Humboldt Forum opened, thousands of exhibits from various regions of the world—including many “cultural belongings” —were prepared for display by conservators. Such work takes place primarily behind the scenes and is barely visible to visitors.
On display are two totem poles from Canada’s northwest coast, an ornate lacquered cabinet from the Qing Dynasty, a 20th-century Mongolian shrine, and a ceremonial pipe of the Umoⁿhoⁿ people from Nebraska.
These five exhibits and a brochure with in-depth information offer fascinating insights into the issues and methods of restoration.
The exhibition focuses on the complex decision-making processes that influence the preservation and presentation of cultural heritage. Particular emphasis is placed on dialogue and cooperation among international partners, conservators, and curators.
How do these discussions influence the management of collections, restoration, and presentation?
Insights – Perspectives
Accompanying the exhibition, the educational project “Insights – Perspectives” offers a unique perspective: students from the Carl-Friedrich-von-Siemens-Gymnasium in Berlin-Spandau have developed four audio recordings that bring the exhibited objects to life in a whole new way.
