RETROSPECTIVE: 100 YEARS OF KONRAD WOLF
LISSY

Berlin 1932: LISSY, Konrad Wolf's third feature film, his first major cinematic success and also the first film he set in Berlin, begins and ends with a pan across the rooftops of the city and a bustling intersection with an S-Bahn elevated station. Wolf shows streets, backyards, leafy colonies and stairwells, sometimes polished, sometimes run-down. Lissy, the daughter of a social-democratic trade unionist from "red" Wedding, moves between these poles, hoping to achieve social advancement by marrying the small-time employee Fromeyer. This only succeeds when Fromeyer joins the SA and is appointed Sturmbannführer after committing acts of violence against communists.
