With Just Looking , Galerie Thomas Schulte presents a solo exhibition by Richard Deacon with new prints and large-format ceramic sculptures. The diverse series underline Deacon's preference for variation, his evolving construction methods and his systematic approach to the material. In glazed ceramics, digital prints on polyester and painted steel, different surface qualities emerge, giving each work its own character: with varying degrees of mattness and gloss, alternately smooth and rough, open or closed, seemingly flat or decidedly voluminous. While ceramic sculptures lying on the floor seem to sway on unsteady ground, others stand tall and firmly anchored. Despite their deliberately open formal language and the multitude of possible associations, the works seem to address a question to the viewer - or rather trigger a mental impulse - a statement whose meaning is deliberately kept in limbo and which dispenses with a final resolution.
