04.12.2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great German-language poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Born in Prague, where he also completed his studies, he was a traveler throughout his life and also lived in Berlin (Wilmersdorf) for four years. Rainer Maria Rilke is one of the most important pioneers of modern poetry.
The Berlin actor Karl-Heinz Barthelmeus has devoted himself intensively to Rilke's lyrical work for almost five decades. About 13 years ago, he began an intensive collaboration with his friend, the Berlin mathematician and musician Albrecht Gündel-vom Hofe, to open up new horizons for Rilke's poetic texts in the spirit of Poetry & Jazz. In the RMR project, which was conceived as a work in progress, Rilke's poetry now finds its musical counterpart in Karl-Heinz's recitation in the form of compositions written by Albrecht especially for the occasion and in spontaneous improvisations performed by the AGvH Jazz Ensemble with cello, piano, bass and drums. This opens up completely new and unusual worlds of listening experience for Rilke's poetry.
