250 years
The Sorrows of Young Werther
Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther was first published in 1774 and became a global sensation. The text and its polarizing hero became a cult and were copied and adapted many times. In this lecture series, the extensive reception of Werther will be examined from a literary, cultural, historical and psychoanalytical perspective.
A number of guests and academics from the TU will address topics such as the historical context of Werther, the novel's spatial constellations and its representation in film and musical theater.
The lecture series is organized by the Institute of German Studies at the TU Braunschweig
(Prof. Dr. Cord Berghahn and Prof. Dr. Julia Schöll). It is supported by the association "Freunde der Weltliteratur".
