Rising From the Ashes - A Gathering on Rematriations, Reparations and Restitutions is dedicated to the resilience of Indigenous communities who have faced various forms of epistemic violence throughout history. In an effort to counter the effects of such violence, the two-day congress at HKW offers an opportunity for reflections and conversations that understand the body and its creative expressions as a site and vehicle of knowledge, and also aims to stimulate critical approaches to the protection of Indigenous sovereignty. The format of the program strives to bring together sensory experiences, affects, relationships and discursive forms of expression. The focus is on the act of rematriation, understood as a method to initiate a change of perspective with regard to the restitution of cultural heritage and to view objects not only in their objectivity, but also in their subjective references. Rematriation, reparation and restitution are the key methodological terms used during the congress to address historical injustices.

In addition to the discursive components, which include performative, sonic, participatory, culinary and communal offerings, the program deals with elements of nature such as the sky, the stars or the cosmos, but also with water, earth, fire, air, plants, animals and more. In this way, indigenous knowledge and technologies of life are to be made visible, inspiring healing and reinvention. HKW is pleased to welcome contributions and the presence of historians, philosophers, artists, educators, scientists and cultural producers such as Léuli Eshrāghi, Soñ Gweha, Satch Hoyt, Intikuren, Jessie Kleemann, Dr. Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala, Marilú Mapengo Námoda, Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald, Prof. Kum'a Ndumbe III, Sylvie Njobati, Eeva-Kristiina Nylander, Alima Pélagie, Aura Mari Pieski, Rosanna Raymond, Diana Rico, Michelle Schenandoah and Nathalie Vairac.
