AVE! TOGA ALARM IN THE LOCOMOTIVE SHED

753 - Rome hatches from the egg. One of the greatest empires in world history emerges from a small village on the Tiber: the Roman Empire. The Lokschuppen uses spectacular objects to tell the story of the people of antiquity from a new perspective - and of the traces they left behind. Citizens and traders, legionaries and farmers, children and emperors, worshippers of the gods and gladiators take center stage. They show what held the Roman Empire together at its core: the people themselves.

ROMANS REAL. WITHOUT SANDALS.

A lively hands-on exhibition with multimedia and analog stagings paints a picture of everyday life between luxury and the fate of life, between wine, chariot racing and wild boar with narrative power and scientific depth. It shows Roman life not in black and white, but colorful, polyphonic and full of emotion. Identity arises from many things: origin, language, roles and attributions. It is not a fixed core, but a process. The faces and stories show how diverse Roman life was and how changeable what we call "Roman" today is.

THE LEGACY OF THINGS

Over 500 fascinating originals invite you to marvel - from spectacular treasure troves to everyday objects. But the real treasure lies in their stories of encounter, change and fusion. If you look closely, you will see that the traces of the past lead directly to the present.

BUILD WITH!

Become a master builder in LOCDVNVM*! Together, over half a million original Lego® bricks are used to create the world's largest idealized Roman city. Tribute 3 €. *The design and building plans were developed by independent model builders especially for this project. LEGO® is a brand of the LEGO Group, which is not involved in this project.

What makes this exhibition so unique?

• TOUCH ALLOWED. Feel history - selected originals from Roman times can be touched
• PARTICIPATE INSTEAD OF LOOKING. Write on wax tablets, dress up in Roman costume, create a mosaic, play "Roman" - become part of everyday Roman life.
• "MOSAIK RIDDLE BOOK" for children. Exciting tasks await at various stations in the exhibition. Those who complete them collect "mosaic stones" and thus clues for the solution word.
• MINT A ROMAN COIN. As a "reward" for your work as a master builder LOCDVNVM, you can mint a "real" Roman coin and take it home with you.
• WAGON RACE. Take part in the "Circus Maximus" yourself: after participating in the media "chariot race", you can take a selfie home with you as a souvenir.
• PERSONAL, UP CLOSE, IMMERSIVE. Fictional but historically based characters from different regions and social classes of the empire form a special narrative layer. Ten top-class authors, including Bernhard Hennen, Theresa Hannig and Markus Heitz, have written emotional audio stories from Roman life exclusively for the exhibition. Impressive, artistic black and white portraits give the stories their face.

• XXL DURATION WITH CHANGING OBJECTS. Due to the duration of the exhibition, some exhibits will be replaced over time. As a member of the Freundeskreis Lokschuppen e.V. (from €35 per year), you can visit the RÖMER as often as you like.
