The Rozhinkes from Leipzig were already a highly acclaimed klezmer ensemble in Schwerte years ago. The group's musicians offer klezmer music at the highest level: they simply rock!

The program in Schwerte refers to the famous singer and actress Molly Picon, originally Malka Opiekun (1898-1992), who was one of the most influential Jewish personalities in American musical culture, from the Yiddish theater of the 1920s, through the heyday of Yiddish film in the 1930s and 1940s, to English-language musical and film productions (including Oscar-winning "Anatevka" in 1971).

In our program, Samuel Seifert incorporates entertaining information about her history into his presentation so that the audience can get to know this musician - who is probably unknown to most people - a little better.

It is important to the Rozhinkes to show that they do not present klezmer music and Yiddish song - which emerged from the traditional Jewish festive music of Eastern European Jews - as mere memories or artistic witnesses of a lost musical culture, but as a living musical language, as part of a vital Jewish cultural landscape of the present.

The Rozhinkes ensemble therefore not only plays the old folk dances and sings the Yiddish folk songs, but also juxtaposes new klezmer compositions of the 20th century with its own new creations. They also like to dedicate themselves to Jewish musical personalities who helped shape the musical culture of their time.

You will hear an exquisite selection of songs that Molly Picon has sung in stage works and films and co-authored.
