The best adventures often start in the middle of the night - and Rum Jungle is no exception. For the four Australians, it all started at three o'clock in the morning at a party, from which a successful band with international tours eventually emerged. Singer Benny McIntyre was sitting on a balcony when he met guitarist Josh Giles and bassist Michael Kolmajer. The spontaneous conversation led to regular jam sessions, during which the first original songs were soon written. The only thing missing was a drummer to record them in the studio: Benny found one in his 15-year-old colleague Frazer McDonald, with whom he was working in a burger joint - and the band was complete. Benny quickly adopted the name "Rum Jungle" from his father's musical past, who had once played in a band of the same name. Their music bears the hallmarks of their native Newcastle - sunny days and long beaches characterize their mix of surf rock and alt-pop, which captures the feeling of an endless summer. With their first two EPs "Crazy Days" (2017) and "Sun & Smoke" (2018), Rum Jungle quickly gained a loyal fan base. Instead of rushing to release a debut album, they patiently refined their sound, which can be heard on the EPs "Everything is Easy" (2022) and "Hold Me in the Water" (2023). Their patience paid off: Their debut album "Recency Bias" was released in February, perfectly capturing the essence of Rum Jungle - nostalgia, youthful chaos, indie sleaze and beach parties. The title alludes to a well-known phenomenon: The band loves each new song more than the older ones - the so-called recency bias. The result is a carefree, energetic work that could also be the soundtrack to a coming-of-age film - and deservedly landed in the top 10 of the Australian charts. Today, Rum Jungle no longer play at backyard parties, but on major international stages - not least because of their electrifying live performances. They are coming to Germany in February - three exclusive concerts are scheduled.
