Only 23 years old, Samara Joy is already challenging comparisons to some of the great singers in jazz history. The Bronx, New York native, who won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2023, likes to engage with the long tradition in which she stands. "I think maybe people feel that I'm not just pretending, but I really have a deep connection to it," she says, but immediately adds, "I still have a lot to learn, even though I've sort of passed the final exam. I'm at the very beginning - most of it is yet to come." On her second album Linger Awhile, released in September 2022, she puts her very personal touch on standards like Misty, Someone to Watch Over Me and 'Round Midnight. Some of these will certainly be heard at her Berlin debut in the Pierre Boulez Saal.
