SANCTA

Florentina Holzinger opens SANCTA with Paul Hindemith's one-act opera SANCTA SUSANNA, in which a nun is brutally punished for her sexual self-determination. This is followed by a holy mass: Bach, Rachmaninov, metal, noise and contemporary compositions come together in a musical tour de force in which the magic and miracles of the church are appropriated, but also its relationship to victimization and violence is dealt with. SANCTA contrasts the religious disciplining and punishment of sexuality in order to achieve religious ecstasy with a pleasurable alternative concept. In search of transcendence, body modification artists* twist the religious topoi of crucifixion wounds, penetration, cannibalism and transformation; show magicians* present their interpretations of biblical miracles; the Sistine Chapel becomes a climbing wall, the opera a rock musical, God a robot, Jesus Christ a Jesus Christ Superstar. The holy mass becomes a spectacle, magic and miracles, according to Florentina Holzinger, must become a real possibility. Spidery and dark, loud and excessive, funny and redemptive, SANCTA challenges religious conventions in an attempt to renew them at the same time.

SANCTA will be performed at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in November 2024.

The performances from May 30 to June 2, 2024 will take place in the Great House of the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin!

There is the possibility of a bus transfer from the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and back to the performances at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater in Schwerin. Tickets can be purchased separately via the links below and do not include the ticket for the performance. The return trip including all fees costs €45, separate single tickets are not available.
