Why pigeonhole music when you can simply feel it? SANUYÉ from Cologne answers this question with every note of their album "We All Become Stories". Led by singer and songwriter Katharina Koch, whose voice is reminiscent of the emotional directness of Amy Winehouse and the narrative depth of Lianne La Havas, the group's sound moves fluidly between indie jazz, neo soul, pop and a hint of chanson. The result is music that cannot be pinned down - honest, direct and captivating. The music reveals an irrepressible joy in pointed formulations and surprising twists with gripping grooves and wide associative spaces. Even if Katharina Koch's lyrics are sometimes far less cheerful than the musical vehicles that carry them, SANUYÉ manage with ease to clothe profound content in an optimistic shell in every respect and thus unobtrusively anchor it in the subconscious through the back door to the dance floor.
Live, it becomes clear that this is not just a singer with accompanying musicians, but a genuine, organically grown collective. The seven musicians, who found each other in music studies and the German Federal Jazz Orchestra, give each other space and create a broad, dynamic band sound that switches effortlessly between pulsating energy and intimate, narrative moments.
