To do something against the inactivity, Alberto Sanchez (harp), Johannes Köppen (saxophone) and Manuel Beutke (cajon) founded the band Saxyarpa at the beginning of the lockdown and started to play in apartment buildings, staircases, gardens, on and under balconies. This unusual line-up turned out to be a stroke of luck. The public loves this music made of a lot of rhythm, beautiful melodies and a jazz accented saxophone.
Alberto Sanchez grew up in Paraguay and played the harp from childhood. Meanwhile he is a true virtuoso on his instrument and winner of the Folklore Oscar. Rhythmically, harmonically and melodically he draws from the full and is able to replace an entire rhythm section. He is a member of the band Gleis 8 around the Rosenstolz - singer AnNa R..
Johannes Köppen is a Hamburg boy. He can look back on a long career as a saxophonist and is equally at home in rock and pop as in jazz. He has played with Ken Norris, Linda Fields, Jon Hammond, Marla Glen and Roger Chapman, among others.
Manuel Beutke is known for his work with the punk band The Detectors. As a drummer, Manuel is at home in punk, and as a percussionist he is in high demand with flamenco bands.
When these three musicians meet, the apparent opposites of soul, pop, folk, flamenco and jazz give rise to a very unique and unmistakable sound. No matter whether Saxyarpa play their own songs or interpret foreign compositions.
