In the organizer's words:
In Dialogue with Architecture – A Visit to Maria Regina
“Schaulust: Excursions into Ecclesiastical Architectural Culture” combines a deep appreciation and understanding of architecture commissioned by the church with encounters and dialogue. Architecture, artistic design, and the urban context come to life through discussions with experts in architecture and architectural history. In addition, moderated discussions with parishioners as well as interested visitors will explore topics such as day-to-day operations, challenges in preserving historic building structures, and technical repairs.
With the Catholic Church of Maria Regina in Fellbach, Stuttgart architect Klaus Franz (1923–1999) created a landmark of both sacred architecture and urban design: The church’s extraordinary concrete sculpture was built between 1963 and 1967 as part of a Catholic parish center complex. Set on a circular floor plan, the church interior rises from the ground like a truncated cone set at an angle, reaching toward the light.
Throughout his life, Klaus Franz engaged intensively with the architectural challenge of designing churches. He created abstract, radical architectures and forms that harnessed concrete as an opportunity: the function and inner life of the spaces are directly reflected in the shape of the churches. Liturgy is materialized and made tangible.
We cordially invite you to join us in visiting this very special architectural ensemble!
