What is Jewish music?
The internationally renowned guitarist Lucian Plessner explores this question in an introductory lecture and in a subsequent concert interprets Jewish composers from 1000 years ago, of Sephardic and Ashkenazi provenance and outlines their contribution to the high culture of our world in words and music.
After completing his studies, Lucian Plessner lived in Spain for five years and was the first foreign concert guitarist to be invited by a concert agency to go on tour there. Leonard Bernstein became aware of him and encouraged him to adapt his music for the guitar. Lucian Plessner performed this program all over the world, from Hong Kong to San Francisco. He worked on his Spanish concert repertoire with the pianist Alicia de Larrocha, gave a concert for Yehudi Menuhin and made several guest appearances with Klaus Maria Brandauer. For the Leonard Bernstein anniversary year 2018/19, he will perform his arrangement of Suite from West Side Story with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, which was created at the suggestion of the Leonard Bernstein Office NYC.
