SCHWARZ, ROT, GOLD! Ein besonderer Blick auf die Nationalmannschaft von Philipp Reinhard

From May 24 to July 6, 2024, the Leica Gallery Stuttgart presents the photographer and filmmaker Philipp Reinhard, who has accompanied the German national soccer team as team photographer since 2017. In addition to well-known photographic moments, his exhibition at the Leica Gallery Stuttgart shows above all unseen motifs that open up a new perspective on the world of top-class sport. His sports reportage will appeal to soccer fans and photography enthusiasts alike.

Philipp Reinhard's photographs are an impressive retrospective of more than seven years of the German national soccer team. In addition to numerous international matches and training sessions, the portfolio includes the 2018 World Cup in Russia and 2022 World Cup in Qatar as well as empty stands under the influence of the pandemic at the 2021 European Championship. As the official DFB team photographer, he is responsible for team photos, player portraits and the highlights of the matches. He also shows situations from training, inconspicuous moments from the sidelines and intimate, close-up snapshots. This creates a multi-layered picture of the team and Reinhard's photographic quality is impressive. Through his photographs, we can sense and follow the team spirit and team dynamics in many different aspects.

He often takes a step back as a photographer and uses his framing to make it clear to us that photography plays an important but at the same time subordinate role in the players' everyday lives. For example, the set for the player portraits is set up in the smallest of spaces in a hotel room. In terms of photography, Reinhard likes to take on the role of the silent observer. He shows us private moments with respect and sensitivity, without overstepping the right of those photographed to their privacy. In addition, he sometimes creates abstract images of inconspicuous peripheral moments. Formal image compositions, in which the subject of soccer recedes into the background and the photographic quality is enriched by an important nuance in the overall view, complement the exhibition.

The exhibition begins just in time for the national team's training camp for the European Football Championship taking place in Germany. The course of the tournament will also be reflected in the exhibition: New photographs will be added to the exhibition at least once a week, providing further insights from the photographer into the preparations and later the tournament. We can look forward to unseen facets of recent soccer history.
