The concert begins with the Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms, which contains quotations from four student songs. The final motif is particularly well-known, which is why the overture is often referred to as "Gaudeamus igitur". Reinecke's Flute Concerto op. 283 impresses with its expressive melodies, virtuoso flute writing and masterful orchestration. It combines elegant melodies, rich harmonies and a finely tuned collaboration between flute and orchestra. The musical highlight is the 2nd Symphony by Johannes Brahms, which was composed in 1877 during his summer vacation at Lake Wörthersee. Composed in high spirits, the work was already a hit at its premiere in September 1877.
