We defy the Berlin New Year weather and think ourselves on the South American continent. A concert between serious themes and dances, between serious dances and thematic seriousness.
First we open with Emilie Mayer's Faust Overture. But before the concert becomes too ponderous, we immediately counter this with dramatic seriousness made flesh: Ludwig van Beethoven's 7th Symphony, which, however, does not come across as serious and ponderous as its creator's reputation might suggest. It is upbeat, dance-like and almost boozy at the end, full of rhythms and power. The perfect precursor for the second half, in which Heitor Villa-Lobos bridges the Atlantic and wraps Brazilian music in the style of Bach in his Bachianas Brasilierias No. 7.
The program concludes with the dances from Estancia by Alberto Evaristo Ginastera, which are based on a setting of an Argentinian national epic - seriousness and dance from two continents in one concert.
