Sing our Songs!
In the organizer's words:
Singing has always been a central component of labor struggles - including in the Ruhr region. Thematically linked to the exhibition Radical Hope. Art and Labor Struggle at the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen (13.6. - 4.10.2026), the opera choir of the Musiktheater im Revier presents historical songs in the former church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt in Gelsenkirchen-Buer with a focus on labor disputes and strikes as a participatory practice. Laymen and amateur choirs sing a selection of regional, national and international workers' songs together with the opera choir. The audience is also invited to sing along. Together, we want to fill the church space with song and the different perspectives of workers' struggles. Songs from the region - such as those of the workers of a Gelsenkirchen company who have achieved equal pay or those from the mining industry - will be included as well as global perspectives, such as those of the Italian Wage for Housework movement or the strikes of South African miners.
Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen in cooperation with the Musiktheater im Revier and the Catholic parish of St. Urbanus.
A project as part of Manifesta 16 +.
