by Elfriede Jelinek
The sun laughs mercilessly in people's faces, knowing full well that it will be their downfall. It is already causing forests and fields to burn, streams and lakes to dry up and glaciers to melt. Meanwhile, people are still looking for the right summer vacation to really enjoy the sun again undisturbed. How inappropriate that the wind that the air has made is now blowing up and pushing the clouds so terribly in front of the sun.
In a monologue by the sun and a polyphonic treatise on the air, Jelinek lets human hubris fly around our ears - sometimes strangely funny, sometimes furious, sometimes rapidly derailing, only to reach the limits of language, which has no suitable words for this man-made chaos. In her unembellished, honest text, Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek addresses climate change without ever explicitly stating it. At the same time, the fear of the impending end of human existence creeps into "Sun/Air" to find its final place in "Ashes". Katrin Plötner, who was nominated for the Nestroy Prize in 2023 with her production of the Jelinek play "Schnee Weiß (Die Erfindung der alten Leier)", is staging this three-part play for the first time for the Stadttheater Ingolstadt.
