The Soundtrips NRW series, which has been running for 15 years, presents many different facets of improvised music. In the first part of the concert, the touring musicians play their own program. In the second half of the concert, they meet musicians from NRW.

Felix Nussbaumer is a saxophonist and sees making music as research. He is interested in wind instruments, the overlooked and unwanted by-products of their creation, their history, their physicality, their life of their own. And listening as a unifying element. His early career is seemingly disjointed: punk, free jazz, the band, the farm, the apartment building, the wide apple orchards, belonging to a linguistic minority in a border region, the old family traumas of two European dictatorships, the promise of digitalization.

Today, Nussbaumer deals with the unusual things that his saxophone contains and attracts by improvising, writing and building instruments. In addition to microphones, loudspeakers and circuits, in recent years he has increasingly played with processed brass instruments, such as a self-made six-valve trumpet or so-called saxhorns, for each of which he made his own saxophone-like mouthpieces. Many of his works are the result of close and long-term collaborations with other musicians and ensembles, including Noah Punkt and Niklaus Mäder (OUU!D), Aya Masui and Nelly Jüsten (nowhere, OK), Florian Walter, Kevin Sommer, Silke Strahl, Léa Legros Pontal, Fridolin Krön, Ensemble Mondrian, Ensemble Latenz, soyuz21 and Ensemble TaG. Many of these works are digitally documented or available as recordings.

Felix Nussbaumer lives and works in Lucerne. Since 2024 he has been running the non-profit label "ZOK Records" with Florian Walter.
