Cristóbal de Morales: Officium Defunctorum, Missa Pro Defunctis (1544)
"Vox Luminis" - Voice of Light - is the apt name that bass Lionel Meunier gave his ensemble, founded in 2004, which specializes in vocal music from the 16th to 18th centuries. With Cristóbal de Morales, Vox Luminis is dedicated to the most important composer of the Iberian peninsula in the first half of the 16th century, who was nicknamed "la luz de España en la música" (the light of Spain in music). He was not only active in Spanish cathedrals, but was also a singer in the Papal Choir of the Sistine Chapel for many years. His five-part Missa Pro Defunctis, printed in Rome in 1544, is a requiem of magnificent dimensions, a milestone in Western sacred music. With its mixture of Spanish expressivity and Roman austerity, it radiates grandeur and an inward-looking mysticism. With Vox Luminis, this masterpiece becomes a moving experience of intoxicating spirituality thanks to its impeccable intonation, light-flooded transparency and the voluptuously beautiful sound of the voices!
