In "Forms of Modern Exhaustion", Sascha Hilpert moves between documentary and fictional elements - and aptly captures the atmosphere in a psychosomatic clinic.

Sascha Hilpert's new work "Forms of Modern Exhaustion" is a hybrid of documentary and feature film. With his cameraman Dirk Lütter, the director goes to a real place: a private hospital for psychosomatics and psychotherapy in the Harz Mountains. The staff who appear here play fictionalized versions of themselves. Cultural historian Dr. Sarah Christine Bernhardt can also be seen - as a researcher exploring the history of the facility for her dissertation and reading old letters from former patients.

The film delves deep into everyday life today and into the history of this clinic. The special charm lies in the clash of opposites. In its decorative elegance, the snow-covered sanatorium looks like a setting from a bygone era; Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain (1924) inevitably comes to mind. However, what is discussed and treated in this Art Nouveau ambience is by no means outdated, but highly topical. (Source : kino-zeit.de)
