On the occasion of Maurice Ravel 's 150th birthday, this chamber music evening is dedicated to the colorful field of tension of French music around 1900 - with a special focus on the Spanish influence that shaped Ravel's tonal language just as much as that of his contemporaries Debussy, de Falla and Boulanger.
Playing Island is a chamber music project that brings together outstanding young musicians to make important works of chamber music literature tangible in lively concert formats. The artistic directors are cellist Andrei Ioniță, winner of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition, and pianist Catalin Serban, who together with international top-class guests present artfully designed and dramaturgically exciting programs.
For this concert, we are particularly pleased to welcome two brilliant musicians to Spielende Insel for the first time: Jiyoon Lee, concertmaster of the Staatskapelle Berlin and pianist Naoko Sonoda.
